Road may be named after Lara Croft

The UK City of Derby has been seeking suggestions on names for a major road project. Among dozens of entries, the leader so far? Lara Croft Way.

John Forkin, director of Marketing Derby, said he was in favour of something modern. "If you think about roads we have, like Sir Frank Whittle Road and St Alkmunds Way, roads can say something about where the city has come from and what it is proud of being associated with," he said.

"We have waited a long time for this road and we need to give it a name and the right name. Personally I would be in favour of something that projects something new and modern about the city so I quite like the Lara Croft idea."

Croft’s actually a local heroine, since the studio that created her, Core, is based in Derby.

According to This Is Derbyshire, Lara Croft and Florence Nightingale were both pitted as possible suitors by members of the public; the link to Lara Croft in Derby is through Core Design, original architects of Tomb Raider who were based in Pride Park, Derby. E-mail your own suggestions for a road name to samantha.whitworth@derby.gov.uk before August 28.
